;D I DO NOT want to scare you off the Toy scene. But...Do your homework on the V6 headgasket before you turn the 1st wrench. It's no cakewalk. But is very doable as long as you're patient & pay attention. Later...

1k sounds a little high for an 88 with a blown head. try to talk him lower but he will not do it. the 3.0 had a head gasket recall check into it you might be able to get it fixed for free.

I agree about the recall. I have a 92 w/ v6 that had the recall and toyota did it all for free.

Drivetrain? well.. It's an auto which means it has a decent ability to crawl stock, but it makes upgrading the transfer next to impossible. The chain drive transfer itself, which comes with all 6's is not upgradeable, yet. I say yet because Marlin recently released an adapter to mount a toy crawl box in front of the tacoma transfer. It seems to me since the taco 3.4 uses the same tranny as the older 3.0 that it would take much for marlin to modify this adapter to work with right hand drive chain drive cases. Maybe if enough people bug him it will happen. The rear diff is good, V6 being the strongest available axle on the mini trucks. The front IFS is not big deal to swap a solid axle into, and can be done for similar money to an "extreme lift" for a stock solid axle truck. That is a lift which includes flexy springs, long travel shocks and a way to mount them, u-bolt flip, and cross over steering. Plus you don't have to change the steering box to run the cross over steering like you do on an older solid axle rig. As far as the headgasket goes, if Toyota won't fix it, I would'nt bother. I've heard it is common for the bottom end to go after doing the headgasket repair, if the gasket actually failed. Either find a suitable replacement motor or consider swapping to a 3.4 taco motor which pretty much bolts right in, it's just the wiring which can be difficult.

;D Excellent stuff Sean. The only disagreement I have is this: www.inchwormgear.com/htmlonly/ Chain drive t-case owners now have an option. Haven't used it, don't know anybody w/it. I've only heard good things about Inchworm. Later...

Which part is it you are refering to 4xfred? The V6 tranny to gear driven transfer adapter has been around for years, but I thought it only worked with standards. Am I wrong or am I missing the part you refer to?
The Marlin Taco kit comes with Marlin's version of that adapter, but has another adapter to mount the gear driven HI/LO crawl box back to the chain driven case. This is the new thing, being able to utilize the original transfer, not just replace it. I find it ironic that the manufacturers said the chain drive was too weak to have crawl box in front, but given the market for one for the Taco and it's driver side output meaning you can't just use an old geardriven and suddenly it's okay.

;D Sean, I was refering to the adapter. #1, I didn't realize it was out before. I just saw it posted not too long ago. 1st I'd heard of it. #2, as there's no mention on Inchworms site, I'll get in touch w/them & see if it fits auto's or not. #3, If I had the $$$, I'd do Marlin's conversion in a second!!!!!!!!!!!!! An updated trans. plus unlimited crawler options!!! How can you go wrong. Later...

;D Just talked to Jim C. over @ Inchworm. Sean, you were 100% right!! Adapter is for standard only. So you guys w/5spds. are lucky SOB's!!!! The 2 options for auto guys are: #1, Marlin's conversion or #2, putting a gear drive case behind the stock case. Adapter is $335 but, YOU!!!! must figure out the driveline, shifter, x-member & anything else. BTW, Jim's a hell of a nice guy. Willing to help w/what he can. Check him out. Later...
