Hey guys. Im a neubian in this yoter world. I just picked up a 89' std cab short bed w/ 22-RE. This weekend I took her for some light duty off roadin, nothin to tough, jsut makin sure 4wd works and all. so far im happyith its performance. Ive already started some engine mods by fabricating a flange with a turn down to attach a K&N cone to the MAF sensor. gonna get it on this comming week. My next project is some traction. I have enough mechanic knowledge to trouble shoot most problems I could have, but I have never had to deal with diffs, im scared of em', i need some help with this, ive begun researching lockers, based on what i have read i think i want to put an auto locker in the front of my rig. with my limited knowlege in this subject, it seems to me that an aussie locker would be a good choice. I would like to know from all you experienced people if this is a smart decision, as well as some other improvments that a poor college kid can make.

i would put it the rear. people say it is hard to turn but i am not sure. i have never driven with one in the front. i have drive a dodge neon with a welded diff(Front wheel drive) and when you get on the gas in a corner it jerks the wheel and makes you go straight.
i just ordered the aussie locker and it i should have it by the 3rd. going wheeling on the 4th or the 5th. will let you know how it is.

Aussie locker does'nt make a kit for your application yet. As of now they are only doing 8" 4 cly diffs as appear in the rear of of all 79-95 4wd 4cylinder trucks and 4runners and in the front of 79-85 trucks and 4runners. Your truck will have the smaller 7.5" ifs front. You could go with a lockrite or a detroit, or just weld it solid. Of course you need to have manual hubs when you run a auto locker in the front. Installation of a lockrite is usually about 100 bucks with the diff removed. IMO you would be better off with the locker in the rear to start. Check the local wreckers for a used electric locker out of a 4runner of Taco TRD. Selectable lockers rule, off road a spool, on road an open diff.

A full locker in the front makes it very difficult to steer, the truck just wants to go straight. That's why I run ARBs front and rear, instant on and off.

Put a Aussie,lock-rite or Detroit EZ in the REAR.Go for it yourself. There are loads of How-to articles with pics on this subject on the net.It makes it SOooo much easier!Using one of these mentioned you won't have to reset-up your gears, making it a whole lot easier than installing a new full carrier type(like a Detroit Locker or an ARB). PM the moderator 4xFred.He recently put a Lock-Rite in rear of his 4Runner.
