I just aquired my 89' with the 22-RE. I went to get it smoged today to get it completely registered. The smog shop told me the trucks comupter would not give the shops computer timing info and that it could not be smoged till' this is fixed. they told me the only way to fix this is to replace the ECU at $350. This sounds like BS to me. Im going to another shop to get a second opnion tomorrow. What do you guys think about what the first shop told me?

I'd get that second opinion....and maybe a third. I don't know what the smog laws are like in your state, but that would suck if you had to replace the ECU to get your vehicle registered. I don't see how replcing the one ya got with another unit would make any difference?? It does perform all the functions to make the truck run correctly, right?? No stored codes or other problems? Maybe they need the new computer! Like I said I don't know enough about you situation, but I do know in good old NY state(upstate anyways) I've never heard of such a thing. All I gotta do to pass inspection is make sure all my lights,turn signals,ect. are functional, and that the brakes are in decent condition. Good luck to ya......

i jsut got a 2nd opnion, they told me the same thing. They said everytime the shops computer tried to get timing info from the trucks computer it would abort the entire smog program, so the computer wont complete its cycle and spit out a green light cirtificate.
im going to check my buddies truck, he has the same year and everything, just need to make sure his computer is the same number as mine, than ill jsut borrow his to pass smog than put mine back in. should work..... i hope

i dont understand something here. if your are talking about going through emissions. they wont know if it is the comp. on 95 and older cars they put them on the rollers. they dont scan cars untill 96. if they are saying they are hooking their comp up to your trucks comp. then that is wrong. unless they do it different where you live at. my friend can go through emissions with out a comp on his 95 neon. it has standalone. all they do is put it on the rollers and see if passes. there is no scaning.

;D I'm soooooooo confused! I agree w/Racer. So far, only a limited amount of areas have computer (OBD2) testing & it's only 1996 & newer. I'm a Pa emissions inspector & have never heard of such a thing. When you get it figured out, please let us know what's going on. Later...

yeah i dont know what is going on. maybe they just dont want to test cars that day.
i think there is a info board in the little booth you stand while testing.

yah guys, im confused also. i am in california though, we do have strict emissisons laws here, im not really sure what is going on. today i was able to put in a different computer. the truck runs noticabally better so maybe it was the computer that is fu ked. im going to get in smogged monday how its set up now. ill post on here after it gets done to let everyone who is concerened how it went.

*UPDATE*
I have it all worked out. I swaped out computers than took it in again. Everything went well AFTER the throttle position sensor (TPS) was replaced and adjusted correctaly. I have no idea what that crap on computer errors were, i feel they were just giving me a load, or a more expensive possible fix. but.... Whatever, I just wont count on those people for anymore help.
