i have a 93 4x4 and a 3 in body lift with 33's. Yet everytime i am backing up and i crank the wheel there is a loud creak almost crack noise. Does anyone know what this is? Also i was gonna lift the front a little more and throw blocks in the back. Does anyone know how much i can crank the tortion bars?

I don't know if this is the same thing that my '94 does, but when I cut the wheels all the way to each side it makes a creaking/cracking noise. On the front end, kind of near the ball joints, there is a little metal piece on both the front and back sides of the CV joint area that is flat, when the wheel is cut hard to the sides, there is another piece that has a bolt or a cap looking thing on it that rubs the flat metal piece inturn making that noise. I put a little grease on the flat metal pieces and it stops that noise for a while. I hope I explained it well enough, its a tough thing to explain.

Yep. Thats exactly what makes that creak. You can go to this website.. catalog.autopartsgo.com and pick your model, year, etc. and click on steering and find bolt groan stopper or soemthing like that.. They are caps for the bolt that rubs on the surface......or if you don't want to spend money get some thick rubber and put it on the surface where the bolts hit... I glued rubber to mine...but it wore through and eventually ended up falling off....Maybe some zip ties will hold better

This is one thing that has always driven me nuts. I've used new caps, grease, lithium and it always comes back. Guess Im gonna have to cut the IFS out. This is pretty common on that model of pickup. I don't think the newer tacomas do that. I have just learned not to crank it all the way when turning hard. As far as lifting the torsion bars. You can crank on em but man it will make the front end ride hard. Get some 26mm torsion bars or just get a suspension lift. Find a used one for $300-500. It is worth it.

;D Good one Snorkleman ;D ;D Sounds to me like it's the steering stops causing the problem. First rule, never hold your wheel maxed out to one side!! This causes massive stress on the pump & gear. Can also blow the sector shaft seal. My suggestion is to get a handful (for spares) of plastic caps from your mechanic buddy, put them on the "pin", grease it & wheel it!!!!! Later...

Yep, it's the steering on the original IFS design, my dad's '86 4Runner did it and his old (mine now ) '92 4Runner is the same way.
