This post oughta be moved to the pickup section as it isn't a tacoma. They didn't start making tacoma's till late 95. That might be your first problem. JK If it is loud it is probably the exhaust manifold leak like you mentioned. Best thing to do is get under the hood and have a friend rev it up for ya and find out where it is coming from. Sometimes I use a piece of hose like a stethascope. Hold it to your ear and move the other end around the engine bay till I find the offending noise. That can help. Good luck..and make sure you figure out that tacoma thing. Could really confuse someone. ;D

no, I have it too! Actually every one I drove before I bought mine did too. I describe it kinda like ticking. I have a theory that maybe it's the spedometer gear being worn out. Do you guys know if the toyota has a gear drive in the tranny for the for the spedo like some vehicles or is it some other kinda sending unit. Mine only does it when moving (in gear) so it can't be the engine. I've had trannies and diff's go bad in other trucks and I'm sure that's not it. Any ideas? By the way, mine is a '92 extra-cab 4x4 with the 22re.

Hey, guys I am there with you. I jave the same exact noise. I have owned two 93' yoda with the 3.0L and they all make the same noise. I agree, I think it has something to do with the speedometer. i work at a local body shop/ mechanical shop and few guys there have also had the same noise in there yoda's but nobody knows that it is or how it fix it.

I've got a similar noise on my '92 4Runner (V6 auto), no idea what it is, but I don't think my dad had it on his '86 (22RE)... Since this seems to be across engines and transmissions, I'd have to agree with the theory that it's something to do with the speedo..... anyone ever taken one apart?

;D Lots of speculation...I have a similar noise in my truck. Mine usually happens around 1000rpm, in gear. Kind of a low tapping? The bad news is that the V6 had problems w/line boring & it's a connecting rod problem. Toyota has admitted this.(along w/the head gasket prob.) The good news is that, w/proper maint., it won't/shouldn't get any worse. I've driven mine for 30k+ & it doesn't sound any different. Later...

well, since it seems to be a problem no matter which power plant is present, I will asume that it's not the engine. I let a buddy drive mine to listen to it. He bought a 4 cyl. reg cab new in '94 and he said that his did it after about a year, and he kept his in tip-top shape. He said that it was annoying but it never seemed to cause a problem.
