I could really use some help here, ever since my father had his 4Runner, it'd burn through a heater switch every few months. The rig is now mine and I'd really like to get this fixed once and for all. I've got an idea as to what might be the cause, but I'm not sure and I don't know where I'd the the specs to check against. Anyways, my theory is that either the resistor pack is bad or the motor is slowly dying, or that there's something else that's drawing too much current across the switch. If anyone else has run into this problem, please let me know how / if you resolved it. Thanks

I've burned through several light switches before, it may not be the same but here's what happened. Sometimes the positive and ground wires can become crossed (manufacturer.) What happens is the wires fry and melt the insulator and then the excess current melts the switch. There are 2 types of switches you will have. 1) 2 prong, so there are two wires (power and accessory) connected to the switch. These two might be crossed at the switch. 2) 3 prong, so there are 3 wires at the switch (power, accessory and ground.) Here either the power and ground or power and accessory are crossed. Maybe rewire and see if this was the problem. Good luck

that's more or less what happens to mine when the switch starts to go, it's either due to buildup (carbon deposits, copper corrosion etc) on the contacts or the contacts have melted the plastic and shifted position. A quick fix is to take the switch apart and clean it up, if the contacts have moved, put them back to the original positions (they usually just sink into the plastic so that the slider no longer makes contact).
As always, any help would be appreciated.
