Anyone ever run into this? I have a 5 speed hooked into a 22-re. 265,000 miles on it and at least 120,000 on the clutch. When I drive for any long hauls (like to the high country) say an hour + I get problems shifting. The clutch SEEMS to grab just fine but 1,3,and 5 are progressivly tougher to push into. 2 and 4 are only a bit harder than normal. If I let her sit an hour or so then everything is fine again untill it gets hot. Also both the shifter and the transfer case shifter get very hot near the floor. What could be causing the overheat? I have never rebuilt a tranny and I would like to know if it will be worthwhile.

I'd start out by replacing your tranny oil, since very few people ever change it

Did that, and just had it rechecked levels are fine and there is no burning

I might try checking your clutch lines then. Your clutch should be using dot 3 brake fluid, start off by changing that out (having a friend helps). Dot 3 brake fluid becomes crap when it gets too hot, especially if it is old. Do you know how to "speed" shift? If you do, try shifting that way and see how the gears take, if you don't I wouldn't try it.

The master and slave were both just replaced within the last 8 months (by a pro) and I had them recheck the work as well. Everything seems to check out. Also speed shift is not feasable due to a symptom of the problem. When you shift into gear the stick hangs up. So if I dont pay close attention to the "feel" of the gear then when I let out the clutch it will grind or pop back out.

he guys, i have an 89 6cyl. 5 spd. with 106k mi. and i have a similar problem... it doesn't seem to be affected by length of time i drive too much... some times it happens as soon as get in the thing.. what it does is when i'm stopped at a light or whatever in nuetral and i go to shift into 1st it just won't go in... i try the old go into second first trick but that doesn't always work... sometimes if i hit reverse real quick it'll help too but not always. any suggestions on this... thanks -Dan

the 5 speeds are notorious for eating up the sincros.
I have the v6 with a 5 speed with 190K on it and its not to bad. Im starting to have probs finding revers for a while but i started doing the first then reverse a long time ago. I do it out of habbit now. Every now and then 3rd is hard to shift to when towing but that just be a simptom of the trany being under load and having a lot of miles on it.

Thanks for the feedback but I sold the truck. I traded it in for a 1993 x cab with 81,000 miles. This weekend the tranny started to smell like burnt gearoil and was leaking VERY burnt oil from the bellhousing. I cleaned it up and traded it for the PU. I even got $1500 trade in with 265,000 miles on it.

Hey Guys, Just joined the forum. I have a '95 4runner, 3.0L V6 with a similar clutch problem. Only mine works fine until the engine gets hot. Then, if i come to a stop, and have it in neutral I can't get into any gear. I don't have any problems when the car is moving. And if I ease it into 1st gear while coming to a stop, I can't get it out of gear until I start moving. Makes 3-point turns impossible. I'll try some of the previous suggestions but would like to know if they have worked.
Thanks

It sounds like your syncronizers are going... I had a jeep cherokee with a four speed and the same thing was happpening to it. I really had to push on it and it would go in. then the stick broke off #*#*#*#*. that sucked. so I welded it back on. I would take it to a good tranny shop and pick their brain about it.
