I'm really starting to get worried about the breaks on my 4Runner and was wondering if anyone could help me with the diagnosis. What happens is this: I'll pull up to a light and stop without a problem. After a while (30 to 45 seconds) the pedal will start to sink out from under my foot, necessitating more effort on the pedal to stay stopped... I haven't found any info the the Haynes manual for diagnosing this. I'm guessing that it's either my brake master cylinder or the vacum(sp?) system.... PLEASE HELP!!! I don't want to end up in an accident.
thanks

I had this same problem on my 90. Changed the master cylinder and nothing. Turned out that my passanger side axle was loose and the slop was somehow causing it. I would check that first, give you a chance to check the bearing as well.

You seem to be on the right track. I would think that it would be either the seal inside the master cylinder or your brake booster not holding the vacum pressure to be the cause of the problem. As for the axle being loose and the slop somehow causing it is totally new to me. But you never know, it could be possible.
You can usually tell if the power booster is bad by holding down the brake pedal while you start the engine. If it goes down more after the engine starts, then there's a good chance it's no good.
