Facts: 4Runner 1994, 100k miles Dealer has recommended a new engine... Towed it in with oil burning smell and low/no oil pressure. Compression Test determined that one cylinder has broken a piston ring and is burning the oil. Second opinion is in the works. I have never heard of a Toyota 4Runner needing a new engine at only 100k. Is this common? What causes one cylinder to lose pressure?

Miranda that sucks about the engine. I haven't heard of many toy's having that problem with that little mileage. Most Toyota people realize there is work that has to be done at 100k but techs usually say the toyota engine is just getting worn in at 100k. Not sure what could have caused the ring to fail prematurely. Maybe something got in the chamber and wore it out...who knows. Anyway it happened it isn't one of those things that should happen that often. I've had 7 toyotas in my life and never had this problem. All of them ran over 100k fine. Good luck getting it repaired. Go to someone you trust and someone who can give you a warranty on their work. Later

That goes for me too. I've had 4 TOYS (down to 2) and never had that problem either. My current 85 I bought brand new and just replace the engine on it about three years ago with just over 200,000 miles on it. And I've been taken it wheeling (which can be hard on the engine) at least once a month for the last seven years and about 3 to 4 times a year be fore that.
