I would really like to lift my 89 4 runner by adding a suspention lift but can not find one smaller than 4 inches. I think that a 4 inch lift might be overkill with my 31' tires, and I dont want to get into bigger wheels yet.

first, why do you want a suspension lift? I would recomend a body lift 2" or 3". It will do the same thing and is A lot easier. just my .02 pennies.

Don't body lift 2 or 3 inches. Search this site and yotatech.com for subjects under keyword "torsion bars". This will educate you and save you time and money assuming you want a mild lift. Also, check out 4crawler.cruiserpages.com/4x4/ForSale/BodyLiftKit.shtml because friends don't let friends install big lame bodylifts!

hey mxjunk, I wasn't trying to sound like a dick or an expert on anything. I have however spent the last month tuning my front susp after I added tires and a winch so I figured I could help. One very important thing to keep in mind as you read this site is that all sugestions should always be considered approximations. The reason is that no two trucks, no matter how identical the equipment, are ever the exact same. This means that one guy may have to do a little t-bar cranking to clear a certain size tire and the next guy with the exact same setup may need to trim or go with more lift to clear the same tire. As for your question mx, talk to someone that already has what you want. My personal battle with my truck is the balance between clearance and pre load/travel.

I've heard good and bad things about cranking up the torsion bar. And since I've never had to deal with them (or got into knowing more about them) I won't go there.
On the other hand... a body lift could be a good thing if you plan to do any tire stuffing. Body lifts of one or two inches are often necessary to keep big tires (fat tires as well as tall ones) from rubbing the fenderwells. Suspension lift aloneāno matter how tall--will not keep tires from rubbing.
Keep an eye out in the FAQ forum. I sent a small explanation to Mike on why body lifts are good to have. That is if you plan to do some tire stuffing. If not, then a body lift really isn't needed unless you just want to do a cheap lift to clear bigger tires.

Body lifts are also useful for other than fitting larger tires. They make a V6/V8 conversion easier, and it's hard to do a drive train lift without a body lift.
