I am looking for New ideas to Modify my engine. It is currently all stock 22-RE. I want to get all the bang for the buck. Is shaving the Head a good Idea? Im going to have it stripped down to the transmission this winter so any ideas would help a ton!! TEXT

I don't know that I'd bother shaving the head at all. A header and/or exhaust sys is your best best. It looks like the air box mod seems to work pretty well. I'm thinking of doing it when I get back. After that probably a aftermarket air filter such as K&N will let the engine breathe better. I've got the drop in K&N and didn't really notice too big a difference with it, although I put it in before the header and exhaust. Depending on how deep your pocket book gets there's a the cam upgrad, big bore throttle body, better intake. If you're running oversized tires might consider regearing. Also if you find yourself offroad very much then I'd highly consider a locker for at least the rear. Just a few suggestions, there are some more out there.

Here's something that can add a little kick. Put a 20R Head on that there block of yours. You will need to shave it in order to keep the cam and crank centerline consistent with an 85-95 head. You must mill the 20R head to a measurement of 3.130 (measured from the bottom of the front cam journal to the deck of the head). If you don't have a 85-95 motor then I'm not sure on what the measurement would be. Remember to re-machine the oil passage back into the deck surface of the 20R head after milling to retain oil passage to the top of the motor. Also have it port and polished. Maybe even larger valves it your wallets burning up. Any machine shop that deal with engines should be able to perform this service for you for a few bill$.
A header, exhaust system, cam up grade, throttle body, and better intake would also be good to add in. With the cam up grade you'll be best to replace your rocker arms also.

Another cheap upgrade that seems to get overlooked is a high perf. coil and plug wires. I have an MSD 2 Blaster coil and soon will have the new MSD wires that they came out with a while back. They only have like 40 ohm's per foot and compared to stock which is like 2500+ ohms. the coil made a noticible difference. the airbox mod is a goo one.. I found a cam on northwest offroad for 150.00. As soon as I get rid of my smallblock powered s-10 My truck is getting hopped up a bit.
