It may be starting to come undone and may need to be replaced. I'd try lubing it first with some white grease spray. Just reach up behind your dash to get to the end of the cable. If it to hard of an to access this way then you can pull off the pannel custer off to get to it. There should be a push type release on it. Pull the end down spray it and push it back in. Could see if the cable will pull out to check it. I don't remember if they did or didn't come out, but I'm thinking they didn't.

I have an 86 e-tra cab amd replaced the cab from a little accident I had . It broke my heart. on mine the cover that goes over the guages comes off and you dissconect the electrical connectors that go to the back of it i'v got three. then you can pull the instrument cluster out some eneough to disconect the speedo. It can be kind of a pain in the a**. But its not to bad. mine has a little clip that you pry out with a screwdriver and pull of the cable. My brother had an 88' shortbed with about 200,000 miles on it and the body was excellent "thats amazing" I live in plymouth,Indiana. We see a lot of salt in the winter time. anyway just shoot some lube in it.

My 90' did the same thing, a loud chirping sound from the speedometer. I took out the speedometer head and greased it, its been over a year and no problems.
