i was reading the january issue of Peterson's 4wheel and off-road and in the Jellico Finals article, it talks about an east coast fad of using portal axels. what are they and how are they different from dana's or dynatrac?

Oh they are very different. They are like hummer knuckles and a straight axle in one. They are very strong. But they thing that they are most known for is there ground clearance. because of the design of the hubs it allows lost of clearance. The diff. ratio is like 3:75 or something like that, and the hub is like 4 something but end up with a ratio 6:1. Oh and a big plus is that they come locked.

Well if you consider a well built set of d60's or other will run you anywhere from $2000-$3000 depending on what parts you use. So at that point your already knee-deep in cash spent on axles. Portals might make sense at that point.

;D One thing to consider: Wheel long enough & you WILL break something! Who the heck has parts for a Volvo/Mercedes portal on a Sat. afternoon ? I'd take my chances w/a 60 or 44 before I went into the wild blue yonder! Just MHO. Later...

The dana axles are well proven and parts are far more readily availble. That being said portals are cool, and extra trick because of their rarity. I don't think breakage is likely to be and issue using a 2 and 1/2 ton axles on a truck that weighs less ten 4000lbs, but for sure if it breaks parts are going to be hard if not impossible to find locally, and mucho bucks.
I would have gone portals if I had not already invested so much money in toyota axle parts when I came across the group buy on bogginfreaks.com for Volvo portals. The things are just plain neat.
