87 4Runner 4WD Problem

i've got an 87 4runner 2.4l sr5 with a manual transmission and the 4wheel drive transfer case that goes in a J formation. my problem is that when i want to put it into 4hi, it doesnt stay in, i have to hold it down and half of the time it doesnt even engage. it will stay in 4lo but not 4high unless i hold it in. does having a 4"suspension lift have anything to do with it?

I"m not sure what your problem would be other than the tansfer case itself. A suspension lift of any size should not effect either of the shift levers cuz the lift would raise all of that equally. NOW, a body lift would be a different story cuz just the body moves up and could get in the way.
