i have a 1989 toy with a 22re and am having problems with the temp. guage. sometimes when i'm driving, the pointer will all of a sudden go almost to the redline for about a minute or so, and then return back to normal. it has a new radiator, water pump, timig kit, belts and hoses, so i know it can't be overheating. i'm thinking maybe the thermostat is hung open or something. if anyone has any ideas on what this could be, help would be appreciated!!

;D If the t-stat was "hung open", it'd never warm up. From what you described, I'd lean towards a faulty temp. sender. Later...

Could also be the temp gauge going bad. They usually kick all the way over to the red when the go. The temp sensor is likely to go out more often.
Just throwing in my two copper coins.

Mine used to do something similar to that. I would crank it up and it would warm up to a pretty high temp, close to red lining and then it would cool back down to a normal temp. If I got on the highway, it would do the same routine again, hot back to normal. I just started with the cheap fix, a new thermostat, and it solved the problem for me. Its never done anything like that since.

I had the EXACT same problem in my 88. It happened right after I blew the head gasket. The garage did all the work on the head gasket, so they were responsible for the temp prob as well. They tried lots of stuff including the therm (and a high temp therm as well). nothing worked. We were then going to look at the temp sender or the gauge, but i sold the truck and got my 97 (the xtracab works great with car seats!).
Good luck... you're not alone!

I woud check the sending unit and the thermostat. mine did the same thing and my top radiator hose would suck shut. I changed the thermostat and the prob. went away. I have never had any problems overheating. I installed aset of dual 9" electric fans I got off a fork lift and it was fine. Then the fan motors burned up I drove it around town fora couple of days even drive thru's like this until I could get it fixed. The temp guage didnt move a lick. I thought for sure I would have a boil over

my 4runner used to do the same thing, in fact, it was so weird, whenever i'd get about 4 miles from anywhere, the temp would suddenly go up really quick and if i'd tap the glass that is over the temp. guage, it would go back down. after about 5 days, i just sprung for the new guage. no problems since
