My 94' With the 22re and 5 speed, the temp needle barely gets off the first white line. Is this normal or does it usually run hotter? The thermostat is probably stuck open.

My yota normally runs about 1/4" off the white line. My guess would be the thermostat is stuck open. You're not alone. Mine is running hot because the thermo. is stuck closed. Gotta put a new one in tonight. Later.....

My first question would be....Does the heat work good? If not then it may be stuck open. On my '93 I have the DX gauges in the dash. This Temp gauge reads just slight before the half. But on my wifes '91, which is the regular 'ol plain gauge setup, it reads about 1/4 the way up now. It was stuck open and it read barely above the first marking. I replaced the Thermo in her truck and it brought it up to where it is now, 1/4. But still no heat So now I'm looking elsewhere. BTW, both of these trucks were replaced with OEM stock thermostats. Sounds like its stuck open, so just replace it. 30 min job and inexpensive. If you get good heat and your Temp gauge is low.....no worries, won't hurt anything.

Yes I have heat, but isn't there an opptimum(sp) temp where it makes better power and is more efficient?
