I bought a 1989 Toyota pickup about a year ago. It has a 22RE in it. I love the thing. It has 182,000 miles on it and hasn't given a lick of trouble. However, when i first bought it, it was getting about 22 miles to the gallon. Since I got it, I have run a tank of STP Fuel System Cleaner through it. I though this would help the fuel mileage, but it went down to 19. I also put a new timing chain kit in it and adjusted the timing as it was way off. After I did this, it went down to 16. I am completely stumped on why my fuel mileage has dropped so much!! Has anyone got any ideas on what could be killing my fuel mileage? What do ya'll normally get as far as mileage? It's starting to get expensive to get gas, so any input would be appreciated!!

My 86' has a timing check connector that I have to short out in order to check the timing. Does yours have this. I would consult your repair manual.
