Okay my friend has this insanely steep gravel driveway that i have to back up when i leave their house. To get up it, I have to slip the crap out of the clutch or just gun it, dump the clutch, and spin all the way up (which really pisses his parents off.) Anyway what I do is put it in 4-lo so I can ease it up the hill, but I don't get out and lock the hubs. Will this screw up anything, or should I get off my lazy butt and lock the hubs? I know this sounds stupid, but I just want to know if I'm screwing anything up. Later......

It won't hurt anything. But of course 4wd would make the job easier.

Yeah it won't hurt anything. What you are doing is engaging the lower gears in the transfer case. It is also turning the front driveshaft. But your hubs aren't locked so they are still free from turning. What happens when you lock your hubs is a cog moves and grabs the teeth of the axle. WHen it is free, it doesn't touch the axle. So throw it in 4lo and keep his parents from shooting your truck. ;D

what would happen if you locked the hubs and not put it in 4wd, because someone did this to my truck and I noticed it a month later. Nothing is worng, but did it screw up anything?

Thanks for the info guys. I didn't think it would screw anything up. joes94yota: there shouldn't be anything hurt by having the hubs locked and it not in 4wd. The only thing that should be hurt is the gas mileage because there is extra drag on the engine. Later......

No. Might have decreased your mileage a little, but thats it. Its the opposite of what snorkelman explained. The front axles and driveshaft were engaged and turning, but no power was going to them. In the winter i keep my hubs locked for 5 months straight, and don't necesarrily used 4wd the whole time. Doesn't hurt anything.

it's actually recommended by most gurus that you engage your front hubs and ride a few miles every month or so just to ensure lubrication. Of course we own Toyotas so we get our 4x4 engagement time just pulling out stuck Jeeps, or the common problem here in the South is stuck Z-71's. I don't have snow very often down here, but my hubs will often stay locked for several months during hunting season. I wouldn't do it if my T-bars were cranked up any higher though.
