Hello Eveyone, I've gone through the archives but didn't find any info. I'm looking to buy a new Tacoma but not sure if need 4x4, has anyone had any trouble with 4x2 as far as towing for example jet skies, etc... Don't go off road much but would like the option. Is the 4x4 worth the money?
Interested in 4dr v6 Taco...

I am an avid offroader, but I also do a lot of towing (boats,ATV's,etc.). Four wheel drive won't help you towing except getting up a slick boat ramp occasionally. Jet ski's or PWC's weigh so little that you shouldn't have much trouble. If you want a little more offroadability, check out the prerunner with the TRD pkg. (locking rear diff). It should handle anything you want to do without the added maintenance of 4wd.

Me personally i would get the 4x4, even if i wouldnt use it. cause u never know when u can get urself into a situation and end up need it, but like 2003 said just get one with the pre-runner option.

I would say go with the pre-runner package also, I mean, the regular two wheel drive trucks look crappy, they look like the kind of trucks the football team would pick up and move across the parking lot back in highschool.

I'll second that. Me, I would get the 4x4 just to say "Hey man, I got a 4x4." But the 2WD prerunner with the locker will do alot more for ya than an open axeled 4X4 would. Plus it has the stance of a 4X4, so it looks cool. Later.........

Thanks everyone for their info and replies...
I also had originally thought that regardless if I don't use 4x4 it would be nice to have it available, but the $ diffrence is significant plus it seems like no one that a 4x4 keeps the stock differential. In my mind thats double the expense: buy it sotck 4x4 and later replace for a Dana or something to that effect.
Does that make sense?

Yes, but the front axles replace the IFS so that more flex can be achived. The is done with earlier toy axles from '79-'85. They are very strong for like up to 36'' tires, and size tire after that thats when people upgrade to danas. But if u do very light wheeling then just keep the stock axles and get lockers.

4x4, trust me, the TRD pre runner with a locker wont get you furthur than an open diff 4x4, ive seen a prerunner in the mud and had to pull it out several times. there really isnt any extra "maintenance" and it always comes in handy.

Bottom line is you probably don't need 4WD for your uses, so the question is, can you justify the extra $$$ for 4WD you may never need ??

I must interject. A little knowledge of mechanics and physics will show that in certain situations that a locked 2wd can outperform an unlocked 4x4. I like my '92 4x4, and I intend to build it further, but there were many situations that my locked nissan 4x2 could handle that my open diffed 4x4 will not. I'm a 4x4 guy by nature and will continue to be one. I was just suggesting that based on lionelbfr's needs, that a prerunner with a locker would probably suit his limited offroad needs. I also was addressing his question from a grown-up perspective =$, and not from a 15 yr. old bench racing point of view. Just because I may be an offroad yahoo doesn't mean that it fits everyone else's needs.

Don't feel offended if opinons are disagreed with on a forum..... Chad

Thanks for the counseling chad. I am grieving because my Toy blew a head gasket 15 min. into my trip to Tellico last Sunday. I had to take the freakin' Honda and blew all my vacation time like a tourist. Now my baby is sitting in the garage looking sad........ Hmmm. Maybe engine conversion time....
