Hey fellas, I just came back from visiting my in-laws where the wife happens to be staying for a while finishing school (6 hr drive away). My wife said she noticed a a weird noise while driving in 5th gear. I drove it back here, and now I'll try to explain the noise (which is difficult to do). While in 5th gear, under the load of just the truck, it makes a WURRRING sound, not terribly loud, but noticable. Only while giving gas, and only in 5th gear. She took it to the dealer last week and the had the mechinic take it for a drive, he said the tranny is about to go.. ?? I am kinda questioning this diagnoisis, because of the fact that it seems like 95% of the trucks they work on are HILUX's with diesel engine, and they don't deal with the 22RE that much..........but he is a Toyota Certified Mecanic....maybe trying to make a buck. Tomarrow I am changing the Tranny fulid to see what it looks like. Anybody have a clue about the noise, and his diagnosis? Her truck is a 1991 22re 5spd manual, totaly stock with 108,000 miles Thanks for any help!

Sounds to me like its the 5th gear syncronizer. mine has 168,000 miles and it does the same thing but its not that loud. Keep an eye on it or a ear I should say. Go and get a couple of other opinions. Take it to a tranny specialist.

ive had the same problem for as long as ive had my rig. changed the trans fluid, etc and still got the noise. i drive quite a bit on the highway, and my 5th gear has gotten a workout, but im fairly comfortable driving with the noise, now that it has had it for so long without any other symptoms. later, -Andrew
