I posted this in another thread, but I figured I'd try again with a different title. I think my EGR valve is crapping out b/c my gas mileage has gone down and my check engine light is on. After using the blinking diagnostic check, the code indicated the EGR system.
1) Is it possible to clean the EGR valve and/or the pipes and hoses that are part of the system?
2) If cleaning is possible, what chemical should I use, throttle body cleaner or carb cleaner?
3)Any other advice for trying to cure the problem?

I don't know if any of this applies to toyotas and I am no mechanic so take this with a grain of salt.
My gf just had egr problems on a low mileage chevy 3.1l v6. She wouldn't pass emissions for nox. Anyway, long story short, my mechanic removed the egr valve took it apart cleaned all the crap off it, rebuilt some small part, lubed it and put it back in. It dropped her nox by over 1000ppm. So i am guessing an egr can be cleaned to get it to work again.
Right now i am in the process of cleaning what I believe are the egr ports on my intake manifold on a mazda. I get two egr codes on that car. The intake ports were clogged with carbon build up and black sludge to the point where there was barely a pinhole opening. I scraped it all out and will clean it with intake cleaner. I would also like to clean the port going into the block but don't want to get the carbon build up down there and have it eventually make its way back into the system and clog things. Not sure what to do about that port. I will know in a few days if cleaning these ports does anything for the egr codes I am getting.
I know its not toyota but hope it helps anyway.

Thanks, I appreciate the input. I won a used EGR valve off of eBay today for $15, so when I get that I think I am going to play with it and try to clean it up. Once I take the potentially faulty one off, I am going to clean it up too and clean the pipes as much as I can. If I can get both the valves cleaned up and functioning, I am going to probably sell one on eBay again or just keep it as a spare (just in case). I was lucky to find this one on eBay because the dealership wanted $150, so I saved significantly
