I'm trying to clean alot of the carbon buildup out of my intake and EGR system, but I haven't found a chemical that is really getting the job done. I was wondering if anyone has found some brand that is effective at breaking down all the carbon without having to take a chisel to it? I've tried a few of the cheaper carb/choke cleaners and air intake cleaners.

Simple Green, Degreser. You can get it at most walmart type stors. Good for degresing engin parts and cleaning the bath room.

I like to use starting fluid. Its cheap and works well at cleaning grease and oil off of parts. I have never used it on carbon though. I would give it a try.

Those should both work. I often use brakleen to clean things. It should work too.

Is the intake and EGR system still on the engine? If so, an old school method I've used is a glass of water. A little bit at a time, and while the engine is running. Same as you would with carb cleaner. Mainly used this method for removing carbon off valves that weren't closing all the way. Not sure if it would really help with the EGR system. But it's worth a shot. If not then you can use the water to rinse the Simple Green, Degreaser (as the Beanfieldhopper mentioned) off your engine or bath room. ;D

;D If the parts are off the motor, I've found that Berkebile 2+2(any parts store) & a brass bristle toothbrush work wonders. Wouldn't want to risk sending the debris thru the motor though. Later...

I took the pipe off that goes from the plenum where the EGRtemp sensor is down to the EGR valve and sprayed it down with carb cleaner. I sprayed some carb cleaner into the plenum and the pipe where the EGR valve is also.
How do you go about cleaning the EGR valve itself? Do I just take it off and soak it? Or just spray it and hit it with a brush? I'm kind of unfamiliar with what can and cannot be cleaned with certain chemicals
Fred- With the brush method, do I just spray down the pipes and places I can get to and go to it with the brush? Anything I shouldn't hit with the brush on the EGR system?
What can I clean while the engine is running, what do I use for cleaning while the engine is running?
