Not sure if this belongs here or in non4x4 but....
Could someone please explain to me what staking a nut is, what it does and the right way to do it?
I believe it has something to do with hitting the side of a nut with say a punch or something to kind of "lock" it in place. This is just a complete guess so if anyone could explain it I's appreciate it.

;D Bikeguy, you've got the idea. This is used primarily on front wheel drive axles. There's a machined "flat" on the end of the axle. The axle nut has a flat surface around the outer edge. When the nut is tight, you take a punch & beat the edge into the flat. A simple, but effective, lock for the nut. Later...

I thought it was the nut that did the stalking ;D Never heard of too many people stalking the nut
Actually I just wanted to add that this (what 4xfred said) is also done on tranny and tranfer case flanges.

Thanks for the help guys.
BTW I ran across this in my manual with something to do with the upper or lower control arms. I forget what it was right now though
