hey just bought an 86 toyota 4Runner EFI and when i start it up it puts out a big puff of smoke??? It runs great and ideals perfect. just cant figure it out

hey, white or black smoke? white is a rich gas mix, black/grey is oil. if its gas, you may turn down the idle (is it above, like, 1300-1400?) or if its black, you know the possibilities. later, -Andrew

Actually, running rich creates black exhaust, gray would be oil burn, and white is typically coolant. If it's mainly on startup after sitting a while (like overnite), it could be valve guide seals. They get old and brittle and oil leaks down from the valve train into the combustion chambers. When you startup it all burns off real quick. Once it's running the drippage is so minimal you don't notice it the exhaust.
