I'm looking at an 86 4Runner and it seems like a good truck, except for the fact that the rear diff. is welded. Is this an issue if I'm going to use the truck as a daily driver? How much might it cost to swap out the diff with a stock one?
Also, the truck as a 22re and it makes a wierd noise around 2000 rpm. It sounds kind of like a jake brake and usually is only noticable when you let off the gas. It doesn't sound bad, just wierd. The guy said that every 22re he's ever had made the noise. Is it common? Thanks, Will

The welded rear will cause some tire chirping while cornering, poor mileage and premature tread wear on your tires. It is liveable depending on your needs. As far as changing it, it is as simple as swapping out the third, a used third goes for 200 here at the wrecker. Price will vary depending on where you are located. It is a very straight forward job. Just pull the axles part way out then swap the third out and put the axles back in. Doesn't take long at all.
I've never had a 22r so I don't know about the noise.

that sound means you're going to have to rebuild the engine...dont buy it unless its cheap...i had an 86 that did the same thing when you got off the gas it made that sound...i was told it was a wrist pin so i tore down the motor..the wrist pins were fine but the crank was cracked and the bearings were shot...i figured the noise was the crank banging around since the bearings were so far gone..

I figured that about the diff...
...about the noise...ouch! It didn't really sound metallic or like anything banging around but that kind of freaks me out. Supposedly it's an '88 engine with only about 88-89,000 miles on it. The guy bought it last Ocotober and that's what the guy he bought it from said. He's selling it cause he can't afford/doesn't need to vehicles.

yeah it didnt sound metallic..it sounded like the jake break thing...i never noticed any power loss in my truck but i knew the noise was something bad so i wanted it fixed...also i could make mine make the noise by revving the motor by hand under the hood...i dunno its your choice but if its makin weird noises id be very skeptical.
