That's the real spelling of the name of the guy that created Toyota.
The family name was toyoda. The legend goes something to the effect of with Japanese superstition and luck etc that changing the D to a T resulted in 10 caligraphy strokes instead of 14....viewed as an unlucky number.
The toyoda name is still used by the machine tool builder toyoda Machinery that originally was part of TMC and is still wholly owned by toyoda Machine Works in Japan. I do know they are still making machine tools.
Also 'd' and 't' sound very similar in both chinese and japanese (in this case). Often what is spelled with a 't' here is pronounced more like a 'd'. For example, Tofu sounds like "doe-fu" when spoken by a native japanese speaker. (Actually the F is more like a combo 'h' and 'f' together.)
For a chinese example, look at "Taoism" which is sometimes spelled "Daoism" and vice versa
Ever heard of Honda? Toyo-da is how the kanji is pronounced...in this situation. If the kanji begins the name (like in "Tanaka"), you use the "T" instead of the "D". Hon-da uses the same "da" as the "da" in toyoda. In case your wondering, the meaning of "ta" or "da" is a field. IIRC, Toyo-da is something like 'abundant field' while hon-da is 'root/main field.' The 'hon' is the same hon has used in 'ni-hon' (kanji for Japan..characters mean 'sun' and 'root' [English translation is 'land of the rising sun' ]). BTW, many major Japanese corporations use the kanji symbol for 'sun' in their names.
