I have a friend with a 85 4x4, and he just totaled it, but the drive train is good. I was wondering if it would be possible to swap his axles to my 94 toyota 4x4. If so how much of a pain would it be and costly. He just put new axles, 4.11 gears and went through everything. I also plan on lifting it. Any info would be great. Thanks

[shadow=red,left,300]Anything is possible [/shadow]I'm not fully sure how much of a pain it would really be... as I've never done a axle swap, but I have done a few mods with turning 2 wheelers (cars and trucks) into 4x4's. Mainly it's just a matter removing the IFS suspension and welding on some hangers for the leaf springs and then bolting up the axle to them. Hy-steer would be a good add on to go with the straight axle also. Here's a link to some tech note on how to do it [glow=red,3,300] www.allprooffroad.com/sas.html[/glow] Hope this helps GOOD LUCK

Toyota's come with 4.10 gearing stock, not 4.11 that's a dana ratio. Your rear axle is the better unit because it is wider, I would stick with it. If he has a locker in the rear and you have a 4cylinder you could swap diffs, but if you have a 6 I would'nt sacrifice the strength and just lock what you have. The front axle is quite desirable for a solid axle swap. The 84 and 85 axles are the only years that come fully trussed from the factory. Using mostly All Pro parts my swap took just a weekend, with only about 12.5 hours acutally work time. I had the front hanger and rear shackle tubes already welded on before starting. I also had my axle already rebuilt with the steering on. As well I left the shock hoops to be welded in by a professional. I did a short write up in the lift section if you interested.
The complete All Pro kit is about 1700 but you can save quite a bit if you have good fab skills. Make your own front hanger, use ford f250 shock towers, put together your own set of custom spring packs using the stock 84 rears. There are tons of ways to save money, but they all cost time. If you can afford it the All Pro kit is a worthwhile investment.
