Howdy!
Just picked up an '84 SR5 4x4 pickup for $1200. Has 207K on the clock and don't know if it's all original or not, but it seems to be. It's in real nice shape, only a couple of small rust spots in the bed, paint is good, body is mostly straight (one small crease about 6" long in the bed) and solid as is the frame & undercarriage. Has American racing aluminum wheels on it, looks like 15x8" with BFG All Terrain 30x9.5" tires with about 50% tread. Runs good but has bad valve guides (smokes on startup and when coasting down) but otherwise runs smoothly and doesn't make any funny noises. Springs are worn out so it rides like a brick, but what can you expect from a 20 year old truck? Also, it came with an extra core engine and the guy who sold it to me said he has yet another engine with a tranny attached that he'll give me too. So, did I get soaked, or is that a pretty good deal?
I'll be doing a lot of fixing up of this truck and want to find out as much about it as I can. Looking forward to talking to members of this board and learning as much as I can about the best ways to fix it up. I'm very handy mechanically, have been fixing up old cars since I was a kid so won't hesitate to tackle whatever needs doing on it.
I'll be posting several questions in the 4x4 tech forum, so please take a look in there and help me out if you can.
Also, I want to get a good repair manual for this truck. What is the best/most complete and informative manual to get? Since I also own old GM cars and have several older GM service manuals, I'm wondering whether anything like that is available for this truck and where could I get it? The GM service manuals are VERY thorough, far superior to Chilton & Haynes manuals. Does Toyota offer a similar manual and if so, does it cost an arm & a leg?
Thanks!
