i checked some of the things snorkelman said a while back, i'm now into the 13-14 mpg range. i have yet to check the o2 sensor and i know the air filter is dirty (holding out for a k&n intake) thanks for everyones help in eliminating some of the problems. bill I would never run a K&N again. I was coming home from a cross country trip in my 4runner years ago when i started to lose power in some hills. It got so bad i had to pull over because i was shifting down to first just to make the hill. The K&N was a solid hunk of ice pretty much blocking all air to the engine. Never had the problem with a reglar filter, before or since.

On a side note my 3.slow never did much better then around 13-14mpg. In the end i was into the single digits. By that time it was a 4cly anyway, with cylinders 1 and 6 reading zero compression. I cant decide if i should swap in a 350 or a 4.3. Wish i could find a 3.4 standad motor.

I've never had a problem with my K&N filter, but then I don't live in an area that gets to 0* or colder like Sean. The K&N you have to spray with oil so I can see the problem with them freezing in extremely cold conditions. So that might be something to consider depending on where you live.

I was averaging 18.5 - 19 with the AC and 19.5 - 20 w/o AC. I have changed my tire size from 31 x 10.5 to 33 x 10.5 and have lost 1-1/2 mpg because of the change in the diff ratio caused by the bigger tires.
Do you have 31 x 10.5? Was that the tire size from the factory? If your Toy came with street tires from the factory it would have a different rear end ratio. I believe with street tires the ratio was 4.27 and with 31 x 10.5 it came with 4.56.
You need a tune up and check for vacuum leaks, clogged fuel filter, air filter, worn plugs, timing off, etc. so you know where to start from.

I have a 91 4Runner with the 3.0 and get round 11-12 mpg. but i haven't changed any thing on it since i bought it a month ago, needs full tune-up, and converter O2. Its a new cat and flowmaster muffler, but doesnt' help if sensor is bad.
