hey guys dumb question-- whats the difference between the taco vs. the 4runner e-locker? If anything? I can get a locker from a 96 4runner from a friend, but all that I have heard anybody talk about is the taco locker, aren't they the same thing? I'm going to put it in my 88runner 4cyl- rock crawler wanna be. and I'll get the cable conversion from downy. Let me know what you know- thanks

They are the same thing. My e-locker came out of a 99 runner. Ive never heard of anyone having any success with the downey kit, let me know how it fares for you.

So you aren't to fond of the downey unit. Are there any cable conversion out there that you guys would recommend or are you just sticking with the e-motor??

Dont get me wrong. I have no personal experience with the downey unit. I have just searched the subject on this site and others and all threads seemed to lead to dissapointed buyers who ended up frustrated with it.
My e-motor crapped out on me several years ago. It was my own fault for not doing something with the motor breather(i didnt know any better at the time) and water crossings eventually filled the worm drive with silt/sand causing the motor to burn out. I took the motor off but left the big drive gear connected, drilled a hole in it and a web on the top and bottom of the diff and use a spring attached to the gear to select locked or not manually from underneath. It was meant as a quick and dirty fix but since my runner is pretty much trail only at this point i havent bothered doing anything else with it. If you have the motor for it then i would stick with that until it craps out. Put a long tube on the breather and extend it up out of harms way and maybe your unit will last.

Hmm good idea maybe i will just use the motor till it dies. I just wanted to start out with the cable so i wouldnt have to wire the motor, or deal with it dieing on the trail somewhere when I need it most but if theres a trail fix for it that might not be so bad, if not I guess thats what my winch is for ehh.

I dont see why you would have it unlocked on the trail. Unless maybe you were sidehilling in snow. But yeah if it craps out on the trail you just pull the motor off and manually lock it. I dont know what a winch is for, never had one. Thinking of buying the cheap one from costco though.

costco huh just make sure you do your homework befor you spend the bucks. My first winch came from harbor freight it's a milemarker with chicago label but I just don't think I can trust it. I hated it before I even mounted it so its going to go on my trailer. so I got one of the new smittybuilt ones to go on my toy. Btw I ordered the runner locker from my buddy today it will be here tommorow...yay!!

I dont need a super awesome winch. In all my years of wheeling i have only been in one situation where i could have used one and i would have needed a land anchor to do so. And that was before the SAS, 37s, 5.29s and being locked front and rear. In the winter i wheel with lots of other people so getting a quick tug is no problem. I just want one for the just in case scenario because i wheel in the bush a lot with no other rigs. 3.8 hp and 9500lbs, if it craps out i take it back to costco and get my cash back. My brother has a Warn 8274 and has had nothing but issues with it. No such thing as a sure bet i guess. www.cpeauto.com/C95385.phpCongrats on the locker. You will find it makes all the difference.
