Hi there fellow toyota truck owners.
I am new to this site and mostly looking for anyone who might have some info regarding the flex a lite black magic fans that are a direct bolt on cooling fan for most toyota truck, all the info that I can find on these fans regards to the petrol engine. 22r and such I have a turbo diesel 2.8litre 3L toyota engine in my 4runner and was looking at these fans as a power increase and better cooling for my 4by as its very hot where I live specially out in the bush. by the way Im an aussie living in the outback.
Would these fans actually cool a diesel engine properly under load and with a a/c condersor fitted in front of the radiator which is a new 3 core surf radiator.? I also run an intercooler and hood (bonnet)scoop. And like most I am trying to sqeeze every last drop of diesel power out of it.
Thanks - thanks alot, great toyota truck site, love the offroad sticker will be ordering one for my truck in the future cheers J

Well I don't know if they will fit perfectly but what I do know is the diesel and gas rads are different sizes. I just swapped in a 3.0 L turbo diesel 1kzte into my 92 pickup here in Canada and I know the rads are different sizes. I don't know about the 3L but the 1kz is alot taller rad than the V6 rad is. Also I would like to hear about how you have your intercooler setup done. And I'm guessing you used the turbo off of a 2LT for the 3L? Another good site for you to ask these questions on is www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/index.php. This is an Australian forum that deals mostly with diesels. Also www.toyotadiesel.com is another good one here in NA. I am more interested in the intercooler for the fuel savings than power but I would be happy with a bit more power. It already has more power than I could ever wish for with a 3.0L but more is always good.

gday The cooler I used was off a R 32 skyline genuine denso cooler, with the 1 end swapped from another cooler, so basically you need 2 coolers, fits perfectly between bonnet and rocker cover and between compressor housing and intake manifold. A nissan patrol bonnet scoop cools it nicely well.
and yeah the turbo is off a 2Lt, prob is no one here in Auz are using electric cooling fans at all, I only just heard about the black magic fans and was thinking I would give them a try, considering I would love the extra ponies not running a clutch driven fan. I do know diesels run hotter and alot more heat to try and cool, because of the cast iron block and head. Cant find any info on the cfm of the original fan but 2500cfm sounds pretty decent from a electric thermo fan, and considering I have to cross many rivers when it rains in the north for about 4 months,it would be good to turn it off
Ok the 1zke rad is prob alloy too with plastic end tanks true? fans also have an extra blade over the runnas aswell I think if not slightly bigger blades. The runnas rad I have is the same as a hilux rad up to 97 models, prob an extra core over the 4cyl petrol, but basically the same size I would assume, considering they are the same front end
cheers anyway

I wonder if for the diesel it would be better to look for an electric fan that would cool a V8. It would have more air flow I would think. And the rad for my 1kzte isn't alloy. It seems to be a copper rad and it doesn't have plastic end tanks. At least it sure looks like it is. Doesn't look anything like the newer aluminum and plastic rads. Also my motor came out of a KZN130. Maybe they started putting those other rads in the KZN185s. One thing I know the guys do with the 2LTE Surfs is they used a Landcruiser fan instead of the stock Surf one. Don't know exactly what they do but the guys on that Surf site do know quite a bit about how to get the temps down. I know it would not increase the power but it would cool better. Also you might want to look into the mod for the coolant gauge that they just figured out. It makes the stock gauge accurate. It is a sticky in the General Discussion forum.
And I was wondering how having that intercooler made a difference on power and economy. Mainly the economy part as the 1kz has lots of power already. I just want the best mileage I can get. I do not think we have any vehicles here like that and was wanting to put mine out in front of the rad but I had never considered a hood scoop deal for it. I have heard they work pretty well but have never really been told just how well.
