Its pretty simple to install. My tach had 4 wires, a 12v pos, a wire for the backlight, a ground, and a wire that I connected to the tach wire off the coil. My tach is a cheap sunpro or something like that and I haven't had a problem with it. I mounted it on the left side of the gauge cluster surround piece.

go to the junkyard and get an sr5 cluster. they look stock, dont take up precious space in the cramped cab, and come with better gauges (volt, and oil pressure) i got mine for 35 bucks

do they just plug in? is there anything else i would have to do to make it work. is there a way to i can make the mileage on my truck to match the different odometer?

does the sr5 cluster fit right in? anything special i should know if i go that route. i really like the idea of doing that instead of mounting a tach on the dash. thanks, any info would help.

They are basically a direct replacement. I believe the 92 and before are cable driven speedos and after that toyota switched to electronic. I have a 94 so i had to get an electronic speedo one. The new cluster has a bunch of goodies including a oil pressure gauge instead of just an idiot light, a voltmeter, a trip meter, and a low gas warning light. Im not sure about the preelectronic speedos but my cluster had a built in potentiometer which can be adjusted for a different sized engine (4, 6, and 8 cylinder) so i had to adjust it since i got the donor from a v6 and i have a 22re. It takes all of 15 min to install with no changing of the harnesses and im pretty sure you can get it from either a runner or a pickup since mine was from a runner (i have a pickup). I was able to take off the speedometer for my cluster and just by taking off a couple screws, replace the odometer from my old one into my new cluster so i have the same milage. VERY IMPORTANT... DO NOT use the idiot light sender for oil pressure for this cluster, it will burn out the gauge, either unplug the sender first or replace it (50 bucks from the stealership). Thats about it i think, theres a bunch of writeups on the web about it, just search
btw instead of cutting the wires to the coil, there is a check connector by the fuse panel, it has a black cap and it is separated from all the other little connectors.
