Howdy everyone. I recently purchased a 1986 4x4 pickup from a fellow for $500. I've done some small projects to it, and I am working to get plates on it. No big rush, just looking to get out of my F-150 into something that gets better mileage. It needs a fair bit of work (What 21 year old piece of equipment with 330,000 miles on it dosen't?)
My question is in regard to lights. I have 2 130w KC Daylighters I would like to mount to a brush guard that I am going to build, but I do not know if the stock alternator will support this. Can anyone give me any ideas? I also plan on adding 2 cheap harbor freight lights to the rear for light when backing up as well as out in the boonies it can be useful. The truck has the 22-re engine with a 5speed in it. I would prefer not to burn anything up, yet at least ;D If the stock is not going to do it, can anyone point me in the direction of a different one and an idea towards price?
Thanks!

The stock alt is rated for 60A (less @ idle RPMs).
2 130W lights will draw almost 19A.
Depending on whatelse you have that's ON drawing current at the same time, you should be OK.

Do you think with headlights, stereo and lights I will be okay on the stock? I don't want to fry anything on my new toy

If its just for backing up then it is just a short term draw on the battery and wont effect your alternator at all. I would wire them in using a decent wire thickness like 10 or 12 gauge. Have the hot coming off the battery using said wire to a 25 amp fuse then to a 30amp or larger relay going to the 30 terminal. The 87 is your switched power and you run off of that using the same wire to the lights. Then using regular automotive wire(16 of 18 gauge) run a hot off your back up switch to your 86 terminal. Also run a hot from a switched power source from your fuse box to a toggle on the dash then to the 86 terminal. Finally run the ground off 85 to another toggle on your dash and then to a good ground. If your relay has an 87a its stays open. Now if you have your ground toggle switch on your lights will come on in reverse. Or with both toggles on your lights will come on and stay on until you switch on off. With the ground toggle switched off the lights wont come on at all. With the power toggle switch on and the ground off your factory reverse lights will come on so you would want to keep both off for regular driving.

He's putting the 130W KCs on the front.
More than likely not short term use.

You should have no problems with that. I had the same setup on my 82 22R stock everything. Stereo running, high beams, 130W IPF lights and I had a 55W backup light on there as well. She drags down a bit at idle when you turn em on but cruising down the highway is fine and it didn't blow my alt.
