So after doing a bunch of work on my toyota (22-REC) the oil pump went out, the gear broke on it and went through the cover of the oil pump. The oil has shavings in it and is pretty dark, the timing chain cover is ruined, and the oil pump is ruined.
I took the timing chain cover off (along with everything else) and I found the the timing chain, tensioners, guides, and all of that stuff is in good shape so I then undid the motor mounts and lifted it up enough to take the oil pan off. I havn't taken a look at everything down there yet but the head looks good.
I plan on cleaning it up really good and flushing the motor with several oil changes but my main question is "Will the motor start knocking when I get it put back together?" People have been telling me that it would happen so I just thought I would ask.

THe oil pump pumps straight into your mains. Since you have the pan off already i would drop the main caps one at a time and check for scoring and clean out any contamination with a good spray cleaner like QD contact cleaner. If you find your bearings just have normal wear then put them back in and torque them. Its best if you only take two out at a time max. If they are scored from filings but the crank still shows no signs of wear(run fingernail along journal feeling for roughness, should be completely smooth) you can roll in new bearings. If the crank is damaged then you might as well yank it and rebuild the whole bottom end. Do the same for the rod bearings pulling caps and checking for damage. If the mains are clean it s less likely the rods will be contaminated. But better safe then sorry.

Oh, since most of the force on the main journal bearings is down ward the wear will usually be found on the bottom shell. So if the bottom shell is good you probably dont need to roll out the upper to look at it. The rods of course are the opposite with most normal wear occuring on the upper shell. Once you have it back together prime the oil pump manually to circulate clean oil through the bearings. When reinstalling the caps be sure to coat the bearings with some lube, engine oil is ok but lubriplate is better.

Also, the oil pump went out while I was driving on the freeway, as I was pulling off onto the exit I took it out of gear and it just died. Then when I got to the bottom of the exit I checked the oil and found all of the shavings in it. I then tried turning it over but it wouldn't turn over even with the fully charged battery, I had it towed home where the next morning it started, idled fine, and then died. After that it would start and then die after a couple of seconds, that is when I got to looking around and saw the crack in the cover.
