got my truck not to long ago(90 xtracab 4wd 5 speed 22re p/u) and i had some questions ab shifting. i want to get the most out of my gears. i ride around alot. like a real lot. whats the best rpm to shift at. um my uncle told me to tach it on up to 5. i dont think thats a good idea because i would feel like i was racing everywhere....i been shifting at 2500-3000. and whats the best mph to shift from first to second ect. would apprecieate if if somone could kinda chart it down. and is ok to place the transmission in nuetral (assuming im stopping) with no clutch pedal as soon as i remove my foot from the gas?will it wear out my syncs. and once i lock my hubs, place it into 4wd, jump some jumps, do i have to reverse 5 feet to place back in 2H? i ask these questions and i never get a straight answer, from anyone....

When to shift? you should be able to feel it. You don't need to wind it out to redline.
You shouldn't have to do the reverse thing to get out of 4WD unless you are trying to unlock auto hubs. But on an older vehicle it may be necesary because of binding, etc.

Yea, you shuold be able to feel it..I mean depends on your gears and tire size...Im on 31x10.50's now and its about normal at 3000 RPM's to shift ..When I was on 33's with stock gearing, I was reving about 3500 RPM's before shifting..I know that the 22r's have a pretty lond stroke, which is good for torque, but just dont take the RPM's like those little honda engines..So I'd keep it away from the red by far...At least not hitting the red on a regular basis anyway..
As far as the 4x4 unlocking..With auto hubs like in the Taco's you may have to back up a few feet to un-lock the hubs..You'll hear them "click" when the hubs un-lock...With lockout hubs this is not the case...So happy driving...=O)
