hey guys, im a new member, and i just wanted to say its reallly awesome that there is a place where we can all share a common LOVE toyota 4x4,s and swap info, right on to get down to my question, i got an 89 toyota pickup, xtra cab 4x4 and i want to throw in a tranny from a 86 with the turbo efi in it, my question is is that tranny more beefy than the standard I4 tranny? cause i think that the axles and the rest of the driveline are stronger in the turbo model than the run of the mill I4 pickup.... if anyone knows more about this i would appreciate some more info.

The turbo trans, t-case, and rear 3rd are stronger than their 4 cyl counterparts.
Also, the trans and case are 23 spline vs 21 spline for the 4 cyl, so you'll have to swap both or change the input of the 4 cyl case to 23 spline.

Thats true what fourwd said, and also if the tranny is out of a regular cab the shifter will be forward almost under the radio. since the 88 and older xtra cabs are smaller than the 89+ i dont kno about that situation..i put an 87 tranny from a regular cab into my 88 xtra cab and i had to cut the floor out about 2 inches under the radio so i could shift 1st, 3rd, and 5th.

well, thanks for the help guys, i took some time, did it right and now i have a solid transmission to put that power to the ground.
if anyone wants to know, a trannsmission from a 86 or 87 toyota xtra cab turbo model should fit into and bolt onto an 89 xtra cab as long as it has a four cylinder.
