Recently purchased a 1990 4runner sr5 with a 22re and an automatic transmission. I look underneath the vehicle and to my surprise.. I have a four wheel drive front end... Yeah duh right, but there is no Diff and no transfer case, it came to me a two wheel drive vehicle. My question is... Were there 4x4 4 cyl automatics in 1990? or was this thing a pick a part masterpiece? I want to know what Trans I need to make this vehicle 4 wheel drive capable again. It's just strange because there are no controls for the 4 wheel drive inside the cab! which makes me think that it was never 4 wheel drive , and the previous owner swapped out the front end.. but that would be near impossible because the torsion bar set up is the same as a 4 wheel drive (attached to the upper arms, not the lower arms like on a 2wd model). What should I do? I want to convert it back to 4wd but I need to know what the control set up looks like and what model transmission will fit in my ride to make it work with little or no modification. Please help!! PROBLEMS

Actually the auto equipped 4WD's started in 1985.
Look at the model # on the VIN plate on the door jamb.
Should be something like RN55L-______.
If the character is a 5 it's a 2WD, if 6 it's 4WD.
That'll tell you if it was built 4WD or 2WD.

I thought the second gen 2wd 4runners were all based on the 4wd suspension as opposed to the 2wd mini truck.
