What motor is in it right now? Im going to guess a 22r so if thats the case, rebuild it or find a used one. Swapping to a 3.slow will be a lot of work for the small gain in power, drop in mileage and drop in reliability

I rebuilt mine for just a few hundred bucks but it was running when I took it apart. You should have the head rebuilt and for sure have the block machined some. If you are going to do the reassembly yourself, get a fsm or other large service manual for the truck. As for reassembling, these motors are very simple on the inside and only the basic tools are needed.

If you need any help I live in Chehalis, Washington. Once you start taking it apart you will realize how simple of a motor it is. I am currently starting to finish up my motor in my toyota (22-REC) Like I can PM you my number and if you have any questions on how to take it apart or put it back together you can call me.
A manual will help though but you will also need some stuff that you probably don't have. Like getting it hot tanked, cylinders rehoned, etc. It doesn't cost too much. So far on mine I've got- Clutch Kit, Bearings, Hi-Temp Paint, Rings, Cylinders Honed, Bored out, New Pistons, New Rods, New Crank, RV Cam, and alot more stuff. So far my cost has been about $700.00, but I also got some good deals on some stuff. Also I went with performance stuff that you won't need if you want it to be stock.
It also depends on what you need in your motor. First you have to take it apart and figure out what you need. You may need a crank, pistons, rods...you wont know until you get it taken apart and get them checked.

If you don't want to get into a complete rebuild you can get a 22r create engine from napa. Im not sure on the cost but it can't be that much i just got a 350 for my dump for $1100. Good luck.
