Help Please if you can? I have a 89' 4runner with 2in. blocks in the back and 24 in. pro comp 9000 and 32's I'm getting a grinding almost popping sound from right rear side it seems to carry the sound all the way into the roll bar as well. It only happens when i brake hard. nothing when i speed up or down. I jacked it up and put it in gear and braked hard and no noise. only when there is a load apparently. the u-joints are fine and my drive shaft check the braking system and all seems fine i mean everything looks and sounds great. but it does have the abs type system on the rear. does anyone know if those systems have issues or any educated guess? me and my buddy are quite good with cars and trucks and we are both baffled. any help or suggestions would be helpful thanks.

just the first thing to come to mind, have the rear axle bearings been checked/ changed? It sounds like you may be describing the sound a bearing makes when it starts going bad. Under load, the brakes transmit more force to the rear and ultimately to the bearings. Another place to check would be the 4-link bushings. Just some ideas, hope it helps.

I agree, sounds like a bad bearing. Jack it up and give the tire a shake, any movement means its fubar.

i did try and wiggle the tires and there wasn't any movement on ether side. the tires spin quite easily with no popping or slight grinding noises. of course it does happen only under heavy braking and going at least 30mph. so even with it jacked up there was no noises ,to help i sat in the back while my buddy drove and the sounds would seem like they were in sync with the wheels. but would slow down with the speed of the truck. it's not a consent noise ether. just 5-10 pop/grind noises while slowing. i'll check the 4-link bushings they are a cracked some. Do you guys think the diff is tearing it self up? i bought this truck just 4 months ago and the guy never took good care of it, just the wal-mart special tune-up.

The ring and pinion will usually make a high pitched whine while under deceleration when it is on its way out. Side gears dont go slowly, when they go they go in a hurry and you would know.
You wont hear a bearing thats going bad unless it is really bad. Try spinning the tire while its off the ground and feel at the rear backing plate and see if you can feel a vibe. Barring that i would be pulling the drum to see if its something interferring with the shoe. I have seen shoes fall apart and give similar symptoms, though not in a toyota.

4-link rear suspension didn't come out until 96. I think you mean 90. So I suck at typing ;D But at least I can use capitals and punctuation and can spell, unlike more and more people on this BBS. Too many posts are nothing but poorly constructed run-on sentences.

I hate to say it, but sometimes the wheel still won't have movement unless it's really bad. Espeically in the rear. I've seen the bearing cage falling apart and there was no side to side movement in the wheel and also rolled smoothly.
I'd say if you can't find the problem then you may need to take the axle apart. Check the brakes first and make sure that they are all put together and working correctly. Then pull the axles to check the bearings.

So what's the verdict? Did you find out what it was or fix it?

What about the rear brake modulator? That stupid little rusty bar on the rear axle, that when lifted, needs the length adjusted? If the truck is only lifted a little bit ( 2'' ) it could cause it to shutter the rear brakes. ( if not lengthened) Stew
