Recently purchased a 1990 4runner sr5 with a 22re and an automatic transmission. I look underneath the vehicle and to my surprise.. I have a four wheel drive front end... Yeah duh right, but there is no Diff and no transfer case, it came to me a two wheel drive vehicle.
My question is... Were there 4x4 4 cyl automatics in 1990? or was this thing a pick a part masterpiece? I want to know what Trans I need to make this vehicle 4 wheel drive capable again.
It's just strange because there are no controls for the 4 wheel drive inside the cab! which makes me think that it was never 4 wheel drive , and the previous owner swapped out the front end.. but that would be near impossible because the torsion bar set up is the same as a 4 wheel drive (attached to the upper arms, not the lower arms like on a 2wd model). What should I do? I want to convert it back to 4wd but I need to know what the control set up looks like and what model transmission will fit in my ride to make it work with little or no modification.
Please help!!

All 4Runners from what I know were 4x4 in '90. Not until '96 did they start making a 2wd version. There wouldn't be any 4x4 controls in the cab unless it had a t/c in it. Probably the transmission went out and they swapped in a 2wd (cheaper) transmission. And then they probably took everything else out.

Please get the VIN off the truck so someone can tell you what you are supposed to have. ( post it HERE ) Also check the frame for previous crossmamber supports in the tranny area. If it looks like sh*t, smells like sh*t and tastes like sh*t.......its probably sh*t! I take it, when you test drove it, the 4wd was fine? Maybe someone stole it. Just kidding....good luck. Really. yes they did make autos in 1990 i have auto 89 p/u, my bet is with the guy that said the probably blew the tranny and replaced it with a 2WD what i dont get it why there wouldnt be a dif! i would think that they would just leave in on there and instead of changing the axle, i dont know what you would have to do to change it back to 4WD i would think just different tranny t-case and axle but im not sure as ive never done anything like that before. but if you find anything out let us know! good luck
