I'm brand new to the forum. Have 1993 4Runner in beautiful shape, but with likely bad head gasket. Will swapping to a 4 cylinder improve the gas mileage? (I'd prefer 5 spd, but mine is automatic, so probably not worth switchng transmissions.) What are my engine options (22RE??) I don't care so much about being underpowered, more about cost of fuel. Dumb idea?

4cly and 6cly trannies are not interchangable, so be prepared to swap that as well. I think swapping to a standard would be pretty simple on the toyota. The pedal bracket should swap right over.
I have considered it myself since my 3.0 is finished but its a lot of work. If my motor was original i would just rebuild but its a cobbled together POS that never ran right so ive been looking at all my options.

Plus you dont get the fuel economy of the 4cylinder. My truck is used for rockcrawling and bushbashing so i dont need big power. I would love to do the 3.4 swap dispite this but you just cant find good cores in my area. The wreckers seem to only have automatic motors and the only times i have seen 3.4 equipped tacos and runners at the salvage auction they go for big coin. I considered a v8 swap for a while but that pretty much means swapping the entire drive train to withstand the new power. With as much as i have invested in my current setup all i have left to do is swap the diffs front to back(e-locker up front and welded in rear) add the dual cases and call it done. Makes it really desireable for me to stick with stock type power. I have also considered the 4.3 swap, but i personally think that motor is a POS. They have rod problems and oiling issues when put on extreme angles. It would allow me to use the sm465 i have laying about as well as opening up other transfer case options though. And of course the number of available cores makes it somewhat tempting. Even a vortec motor can be had around here on the cheap complete with computer and harness's. Which brings me back to the 3.0. I could rebuild it for under 1500 in parts and machine work i am pretty sure. And if it was original i would do just that. But its an automatic motor some asshole swapped in there before i bought the truck. Instead of swapping the long block in they swapped the whole thing, auto harness and all, butchering the stock chassis harness. Also when i took the intake off i found one corner was broken off and jb welded back together and one of the heater pipes was crushed and kinked explaining why the pig never threw good heat. The other one was rotted through explaining why she always used a little coolant. Sorry to thread hijack, just venting. Frustrated that my truck has been off the road so long because the motor went, frustrated that the head gasket on my caravan went, frustrated that this POS chevy i have as my only driver seems to have something crap out on it every month. Altenator, battery, distributor, slave cylinder, throttle cable, and just today the starter. I can tell you there is no great joy then swapping out a distributor on your front street with a minus 50 windchil. But i digress.
