i'm working on an 86 p/u, and I can't get a rear drum off. The haynes manual gave me false information on the direction to turn the star wheel to loosen the brake shoes, now its gotten even tighter. I also can't see the star wheel adjusting lever to be able to turn it the other way. Anybody got any tricks? Aside from getting a big ass puller.

you have to get two screw drivers and push the little plate the stops the star adjuster from loostening while using the other screw driver to turn it the oposite way. its kinda hard to get at so it takes time and a flash light. in my expirence my adjusters were seized and i was changing the drums anyway so i just cut them off with a grinder. dont use a puller it will reck your shoes and all the linkage inside. also make sure your ebrake isnt siezed on. hope this helps

If you are stuck try heating the drum up slowly to a dull red with a torch then hammer it off.

There's also a couple of holes for jackscrews that may work if it's not too stuck. There should be 2 threaded holes opposite each other near the center of the drum (between wheel studs). They are either 6mm or 8mm. Just screw them in a little at a time to push the drum away from the wheel flange.

Okay, i freed up the star wheel and backed it off a bit. Through the viewing hole I can see good clearance between the pad and drum, but it still won't come off. Once the pads were backed off I bent back part of the splash guard and tried a puller, but it won't budge it either. I think its the flange off the axle that is rusted to the drum. So I think its time to add heat to the equation.

Just got it off. A combination of heat, PB blaster and a big puller finally did it. That was a tough one.

9lbs of steel on the end of a large stick generally works well for me. AKA BFH
Glad to see you got it off.

When in doubt the torch comes out.

I Realize this is old but would a slide hammer work well for this? I'm working on one that is stuck.
