Hi, I have a 2004 Tacoma 4X4 Extra-Cab and would like to install some nerf bar steps. I've looked at several brands on the net and decided to go with chrome plated (probably stainless steel). When mounted, I want them to be high and close to the body so the visual effect won't be a big thing hanging way out on the side of the truck displaying a lot of the support hardware. A big (heavy duty looking) tube would be great, but it should be close to the body and as high as possible. More for protecting the rocker panels from flying gravel etc., than for its use as a step. I won't be doing much off-roading and don't need rock climbing gear. Does anyone have experience with brands that would mount in a way that would give the look I'm after?

OK let me start by saying I used to blow off responses like I'm about to give. Ya say you aren't gonna wheel much but if ya do you'll get hooked. So I'm gonna say save your $$ for sliders.
I too saw no need for sliders till I started seeing how far ya can push the envelope.
If you stay true to your word why have nerfs and rely on em for protection, just rhino your rocker panels.

If you're looking for protection of flying gravel... nerf bars are the wrong way to go. I would look into sliders that are kind of hidden if you don't really need a step. The only problem with sliders is if it's muddy watch the back of your leg because you'll brush up against it. If you're not going to have any threats of large rocks knocking into the rocker panel then i'm thinking sliders won't be your best choice. I know 3M company sells thick clear plastic that you can put along your rocker panel to protect your paint, you can do the same thing with your hood. That will protect your paint from chipping....if that's what you're worried about. If you already have the front mud flaps then this would seem like a good choice for you....i have front mud flaps and they pretty much keep everything off my rocker panels. Of course if you need a step then go with the nerf bars and the 3M.

I would also say go with sliders. You can get them for about the same price as nerf bars, and they are way more functional as both a step and protection. You do have to watch out when they are dirty, but the same is true about nerfs. The other thing I don't like about nerfs is how the mounting brackets hang below the frame making them prone to hooking on shit. Some sites to check out for sliders... www.badlandbumpers.com www.bentup.com www.demello-offroad.com

Thanks, but....Keeping in mind that I do not want sliders, is there anyone that has nerfs installed on a late model Tacoma that could give me some feed-back related to the original question?

I used to have them on my '96 (not really late model). I just had the Performance Products ones. They tucked up to the body nicely.
