If it is the stock rear dif. you have and open differential (wheel with least resistance gets power) and the 8.4" housing.

there are a few made w/lsd and 3 dif gear set ups there were also a locker avail that's why I wanted a vin and the housing could be either they were using left overs from the trucks in the start of the taco age

I didn't know they used some of the old 8" in the early Tacos, I knew the ones with the locker have the 8" but that was only offered on the 2.7 in 98 & 99 maybe 00 (or by special order). I had always read that all Taco's had an open differential, from the factory. Do you have a link about this stuff? I'm always up for learning new things about my truck

I work for a toyota parts wholesale company we mostly deal with body shops around 1500 of them all I do all day is look at scemmatics and read codes but you are correct most do have the open rear dif it's just the 95.5 is kinda like a mutt alot of trial & error same goes for the 96 but 97 is when they really started getting it together as far as how the set ups go

Thanks. I am looking into a good rear diff. I need the limitted slip because this is my every day driver. Any suggestions? Also, are these gears good enough for 33's?

You could go with a TRD lsd or get the arb air locker they are expensive but worth every penny

What is the easiest way to get the TRD? Should I go to the dealer or will they rip me off?
