I am trying to buy wheels and tires for my 03 and I'm being told by some places that I can't fit 15's on my truck. Problem is I see newer taco's with these wheels on them all the time. Anybody here done this, any idea how much grinding is involved?

I thought 15's were standard from the facotry and the 16's were an upgrade? I know i have stock 15 inch wheels on my Tacoma, but then again i have a 99.
I'm not to sure about the newer tacomas.....

Now i have heard of not having a large enough backspacing and the wheels hitting up against the brake calipers, but I'm not sure what backspacing you'd need. Sounds to me like someone's just trying to scam you into a more expensive rim

It depends. for 2wd standard whell size is a 15. but for the 4x4 16 is the standard. as for fitting a 15 in place of the 16...i have no idea

Nah, My buddy got a 2004 barebones 4x4 and it has 225/75 15" rims. 15's are the standard size as for the 05's not sure. 15's will fit, either the person is misinformed or full of shit.

im runnin 15x8s on my 03................ what rims are you running. what backspace?
it depends on the style of the rim and which mold the brake caliber came out of. I've heard of three differnt physical sizes that have gone on the 96-04 tacoma.
some people have shaved a few millimeters off the brake caliber to make certain 15" rims fit.

I had asked the same question a while back. All the dealers told me 15's wouldn't fit...but they did. From what I hear it kind of depends on what brand wheel you buy. I have a 2003 4x4 taco and I bought Mickey Thompson Classic IIs for a 15x8. They were REAL close to the brake caliper, but they did fit. Whatever you do, DON'T GO 15x10. They will not fit without a lift. I had to learn this the hard way.

other than body style they are all the same factory spec is for a 15" rim except for the TRD package which comes with 16" rim either will work but when buying aftermarket rims you run into the backspacing problems because they are all made under different specs , materials and what not all of toyotas rims are either 15x7 or 16x7 thats it no other choices except for the style and steel or alloy

My 15x8 Mickey Thompsons had a 3.75 backspacing and that still worked fine. The only problem I ran into was that because of my backspacing the biggest tire I could run was a 31x10.5.

Any Toyota-made wheel will fit, and Toy Tacos deff come with 15's except for TRD's. As for aftermarket, you're on your own. I'd buy a used set of 15" factory wheels-should be easy to find online and cheaper than new aftermarket wheels. The question is WHY GO 15"? A good set of 15" tires aren't any cheaper than the 16's. Your speedometer and tachometer will be out of whack, even if the tires are close in diam., the 15" and 16" won't spin at exactly the same RPM's. If you want smaller tires to lower the truck, why buy a TRD off-road 4x4 model in the first place? Anyway, good luck, best bet is factory-spec'd 15's, you know they'll fit.
