Does anyone know what type of oil does the new 05 tacoma come with from factory. Is it syntetic or regular. If you have a 05 what type of oil do you use. ;D I just got my 05 tacoma extended cab trd off road package with 6 speed manual transmission. I have only 300miles on it. By this weekend I am going to have 500 miles and I would like to change the oil and I am not sure what should I use synthetic or regular.

Use regular oil until broken in!!! I asked the mechanic when I bought my 02 at the dealership and they used Castrol GTX. After the first 5000 you would be safe to use synthetic. That is what I am going to do with my wife's 05 4Runner.

Why are you all taking the Taco to the dealer for an oil change? Have you looked under the hood and under the truck to see how simple Toyota made the engine to change oil? You might be a bit surprised. My only question is if you change the oil yourself, what do you do to catch the overflow from the oil filter? With only one person you are bound to spill some oil. I think i've got my own homemade solution but am still trying to get other ideas.

what i've done is took a racquetball can (when you buy racquetballs/tennis balls, they come in the can) then I poked two holes on the sides near the top of the can. Took a hangar and bent two pieces to hang from the overflow catch. Works so far, but if there are better ideas out there i'd like to hear. If I get the time i'll take some pictures of my set up.
Thanks. Erik
