I have a '99 taco V6 TRD SR5 ext cab. I've never had a problem with this truck until now. It recently started hesitating under a load. If I accelerate very slowly it won't hesitate. But as soon as I try to accelerate normally, it sputters and coughs. It will eventually get up to speed and stop acting up. I’ve done the resistance tests on the coils as shown in the repair manual and everything tests out ok. This is the first distributorless system I’ve had, are there any other tests for this system? I've replaced the fuel filter; spark plugs and mass airflow sensor, still no help. The next thing I see to replace is the fuel injectors. ??Are there any other components that may be causing this?? I'd hate to spend $400 on new injectors if I don’t have to.
Thanks, Ken

Take off the intake tube at the throttle body, and look at the throttle plate. See if its gummed up at the bottom of the plate. Also open the plate and look at the back of the plate. Get some good TB cleaner and spay that plate and wipe off. Probally wouldn't hurt to run injector cleaner for a tank.

I had a similar problem with my '97. Finally the CEL came on. I went to Advance Auto and had the codes read for free. Said a Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) was bad. Replaced it and no probs at all. Try pulling codes and see what you come up with. Good Luck!

yeah i tested the TPS it seems fine.. today i drove it around pretty hard to see if i could get a CEL to come on.. it did a few times.. so i bought the ODBII reader.. it says random misfire cyl 2 and 3. then it would do it again on two different cyl. i think it has something to do with the distributorless ignistion system, 3 coils run the ignition 1 per 2 cyl.

Before I changed the TPS, I almost went and replaced the coils. Checked the dealer and they wanted like $150+ EACH! Try any injector cleaner?

it may just be a dirty massair flow sensor, pull it out to see if it has dirt on the wires, or fuzz from changing the air filter.

When my engine gave me misfire codes it ended up being in the spark plug wires. It was grounding out agains the block when you'd give it power because the spark would be hot enough to cause an arch, causing a misfire. It was doing the same thing.
