Can anyone let me know of a good web site to buy some good 4.88 gears and how much do they normally run. I am new to the off roading fun. Thanks.

It will effect torque, power, and MPG. For your 285's I think that a 4.88 gear is way to much. You will have lots of power but crappy mpg. For those, roughly 33", a 4.56 will get you just about back to stock. A 4.88 gear is better suited for 35" tires.

up to a 32" is 4:56 33" tire is 4:88 anything larger 5:29's these are the set up's to maintain stock specs (or very close to it)

Ok, this may be a DUMB question but who can tell me what gears come stock on a 1998 Tacoma Prerunner V6? The gears maybe the same for a 4x4. Also mine is not the TRD? Does this (in bold above) mean you have a 2WD truck ?? If so, ignore all the above answers, 2WD trucks are geared differently (higher) than 4WDs. 4WD or 2WD, whether you have an auto or a manual tranny will affect what gear ratio you need . No one bothered to ask you that question

Does this (in bold above) mean you have a 2WD truck ?? if it's a Prerunner, it'd be 2wd

Does this (in bold above) mean you have a 2WD truck ?? if it's a Prerunner, it'd be 2wd That's what I thought it. Yet everyone is telling him to get gear ratios appropriate for a 4WD truck, w/o even asking any questions.
