I have a '96 Toyota Tacoma, 2wd, 2.4 cyl w/auto trans and as of last night my engine winds out real high before finally up-shifting.
Today I had an oil change and also had the radiator, rear diff, intake, power steering, and transmission all flushed and re-filled. The mechanic showed me the tranny fluid, it looked real bad, like old motor oil, he also stated that the rear diff was so low they couldn't check it and that the fluid was dark with bits of metal. I was hoping the flushing and re-filling would fix the problem but it still exists just as bad.
In the past I had noticed some problems with shifting here and there, I mostly assumed it was due to the truck not being warmed up all the way. This last week leading up to last night has been a lot more frequent though. Before this problem got real bad I was sometimes able to get the truck to shift by flicking the overdrive off and then on again. That does not seem to work anymore.
The speed sensor died for my speedometer last year during X-mas (2005) so I was also wondering if that would possibly be part of the equation? How much is decent price to pay for getting this fixed? (No tickets yet)
If anybody can diagnose this problem, what would be a reasonable price to pay for doing so? I'm not a fan of working on vehicles.

ATF should be cherry red. If it looks like motor oil, the tranny is in bad shape. Start saving your money, and do not go to any shop that says they need to pull the trans before they can give you an estimate (AAMCO, Cottman, etc).
