OK, I've looked all over the internet and cannot get an answer. Why is it that I can find 3+ inch lift kits for 90-95 4runners but can only find 3" and below for the 96+ 4runners. According to some people, it's the same damn suspension system. according to others, it's a little different, but they don't know what IS different. Please help me.

(Chiming in late, I know)
The 2nd Gens use torsion bars whereas the 3rds have coil-overs and a lot more travel. Regardless, there's still the ~2.5" lift barrier for each. The reason you're seeing >3" kits available for the 2nd Gens is because those are IFS lifts which drop the diff. Generally speaking, you won't find those available for the 3rd Gens, though there are a couple out there with them. I'm not sure if it's a straight bolt on using the ones for the Tacoma, or if there are a couple of tweaks involved. You'll need to re-design the rear anyway if you want to go over 3.5".
It is possible to fit 35's with a 2" suspension and 1" body lift, so I'm not sure why anyone would want an IFS lift anyway.
Lift it the standard 2.5"-3", lock it (if it's not already), and call it a day.

I spoke to the guys at superlift some time ago, and they said that their current 3rd gen lift is no longer in production
HOWEVER!!!!
The bloke said that there is a 4" kit in the pipeline, but is currently on the backburner because of all the new american trucks.
He mentioned that it might be out sometime early 2005.
keeping my fingers crossed.

The 90-95 runner have the same front suspenion as 86-95 trucks, but the rear is a coil setup.
In 96 the runner adopted the taco suspension, coil sprung. The front diff is also on the other side (driver). The rear is still a coil setup.
On a 90-95 runner you can get a 4" lift. I just sold my 95 about 3 months ago....It had a 4" ProComp. I dont like what they do to the rear so I cut the factory suspension out and put in 56" rear leaves. Much better on and off road...no comparison
On a 96 you have all of the options 95-04 tacomas have, for the front. The rear is your big limiting factor. You can only go about 3" without messing up you angles on the 4link and the panhard bar. So if you really want to go big you have to do a fully custom suspension out back. Leaves are the easiest, and they were easy. It took me a weekend by my self, never having done that before. The easisest way is to get a junked tacoma axle housing....
I have never seen a rear leaf swap on a 3rd gen, but know of quite a few 2nd gens.
I crawled under my moms 00 and it looks as easy as my 95 was, plasma cutter and a weleder....
